Next up in last weekend's double (Friday and Saturday) were Amy & Alex. Also at the vintage modern venue, The Oklahoma Heritage Museum. There are so many details and great parts to this story. I can wait to share a full post asap!

I kicked off the busy wedding season on Friday with a really sweet wedding for Sandip & Alison. These two are such a cool couple and even live right near my gallery in Mesta Park. (we LOVE that neighborhood) The Oklahoma Heritage Museum is also in neighboring Heritage Hills and is a gorgeous venue.

We had three of Anthony David Agency's new models in for a mini portfolio shoot last month and here are the goods.

There are several more great shots to come sometime soon but these are their choices to add to their respective portfolios.
We were shooting for two different looks so we did a stylin headshot type look and a creative personality look.

Heather Rouba, (Mrs Oklahoma 2009) has been coordinating the shoots and coaching the models as the new agency director. She has some amazing talent herself and in who she is working with.

WPPI International Print Competition // Award of Excellence

I entered the WPPI (Wedding & Portrait Photographers International) Print Competition this year for the first time. It is fascinating to me to see the work and image captures of the worlds best photographers and also the worlds best and most interesting events. I mainly did it just to learn and gleen what I could from the judging process. It is great in a way because they have the highest standards for every angle of the print: technical photography (exposure, composition, post editing), creative (originality, interest and aesthetics) and not only that but also print and presentation quality (an entire art in itself). And it is all judged dispassionately so really good to hear comments like Simon would give them ;)

So there were 3500 + prints from I think 30+ countries. They judge for 2 days and then put prints that score high enough on display. Ill be honest, at first I thought, well geeze, these are all great, they should at least get the "Excellent" rating. But when I saw the standard of images that it took to get to that, I began to think, wow, maybe none of mine will make it. So, (full disclosure here) I walked quickly through the gallery the first time hoping at least one made it. Well it was exciting that I actually had two. They are the first two below. So thank you to Poonam and her mother for providing the soulfull, authentic moment for the first one. And to Rochelle for the beautiful and stylish moment for the second.

It was actually very satisfying that the two that scored the highest for me were artistic photojournalism. That is definitely my passion and what I feel I see the most when shooting.

"Mixed Emotions" Award of Excellence Winner

Comment on this one: This was at the end of the third day of an Indian wedding that the couple was intensely involved in all the various ceremonies and events all day on all three. SOOO many moments and emotions. At the end there is what is called a "Crying Ceremony" in which (according to tradition) the brides family mourns the bride leaving home. In modern times, the bride either opts out or just entertains the tradition but with out the emotion maybe of years past. (we have skype now ya know). In this case, that happened but afterwards, the bride was really leaving Houston to be with her new husband in Detroit. (are the goosebumps coming yet?) So this is really her saying good bye to her mother and the real emotion began to flow. Tears and long hugs and a lot of "I love you's" followed along with more moments with the bride and her dad and even the groom and the bride's dad. That is why I love being there till the very end and never thinking that the 6327th photo is unimportant.

Album Style // Leather Craftsmen

Album Design season has been in full swing since late fall when weddings wrapped up and we have been so excited to deliver many finished products into our clients living rooms. To me, this is really the culmination of all our work from planning to shooting, then editing and working meticulously with clients to get the perfect album. (This is where we spend way more than half the work in a wedding) Without this finished product, I really think people would miss out on such a tangible, quality work of art that is available from their portraits and event photos.

This is just one of the many we have produced that we recently delivered and I wanted to show you one of my favorite new styles in both cover choice and design. The cover is Japanese Book Cloth in black. names are blind embossed in the cover with a flush inset photo welcoming a viewer into the album. Our designs are intended to be modern and stylish yet timeless. The last thing we would want is for you to love it today and get tired of the layout with any trendy gimmicks that will soon tire. I really believe the quality of the construction and style of design is an integral part of the whole package!

The construction of these books, by Leather Craftsmen, is literally top of the line. I go every year to an international trade show and while I love to explore other options and do add other companies to the line of available products, I always am impressed with the enduring quality and even the updated options that LC offers. And my clients sincerely have loved them.

Red primesteak // Event Space Opening

I had the priveledge of photographing the opening of Red primesteak's event space opening tonight and the event was ultra stylish.
Heather and Keith Paul, the owners, and the catering and event manager, Kindt Myers, showed us what it would feel like to have a party inside a champagne glass with the amber bubble lighting (awesome idea huh?) (IES Events Lighting). (BTW, besides being some of the best in the business, these are some of my favorite people to work with regularly throughout the year at some of Oklahoma's premier events!)

This was an awesome moment. Mike said "I have played in OU football games before 75,000 people, been before a national audience and lots of other high pressure situations, and I never got emotional. When I saw her coming down the stairs, I just lost it!"

The Ladies man here is Mike's dad, Heisman Trophy winner, Steven Owens. The ladies are his granddaughters, her friends and his dancin' machine wife!! Ha! They were the life of the dance party!

We made the trek down to the quaint little town of Paris, TX last weekend for Ashley & Andrew's wedding. It rained the whole day but probably the closest to dry it was all day, we took a tour of Paris with the wedding party. Not one complaint! Good job people!

Here is a shot I have in my back pocket for all last year in case it rained. I never needed it till now, but still it is pretty cool huh?

I got our semi-advance copies of The Brides of Oklahoma Magazine today. It is stunning. My first and biggest impression is how many world class event design and photographers we have in the state! Congrats to my friends and colleagues and of course to Kami, Ashley, Alli and the rest of the team at the mag for a monumental achievement again this year. Amazing editorial shoots planned and designed and perfect choices on the features... KIDDING!!! I am very honored to have another wedding this year chosen as one of the four Brides of the Seasons. Of course the biggest thank you goes to Ashley and Josh White for providing the beautiful day along with Judy Lehmbeck for the coordination and design. I stopped by the new Anthony David Agency Modeling Casting Call this morning to meet several of the new models that Heather Rouba and Anthony David are potentially working with. This is a new agency started by two of the best and most experienced in their fields. Heather is reigning Mrs. Oklahoma and I have had the honor of shooting her headshots and lifestyle photos for both the Oklahoma Competition and National Pageant. Anthony has a smash hit business with a salon and several hair design academies in OKC.

I am so happy to finally get this wedding on the blog! I had the wonderful pleasure and honor of shooting with David & Luke Edmonson last month in Houston for this Indian Wedding. It was such a great experience learning the ropes of a Shaddi from one of the best and most experienced in the world. They have photographed over 180 Indian weddings and gave me so much insight into all the important moments and traditions. I loved every minute of it. Although I was backing up David on day 1, he generously gave over many of the bridal photos to me. So a huge thanks goes to him. David and Luke are two quality dudes!

Oklahoma City Engagement / Andrew & Melissa / Pre-Release

This is a light painting shot that is all done in camera or I should say on scene. All you photogs liked the last quiz so let's hear it, how is this done? (I know it's an easy one)

M + A are getting married in May next year and I cant wait to work with them more. They are very cool people and have an awesome group of friends!

Oklahoma City Family Portrait Photography

I am honored to be asked to go on FOX 25 Morning Show again tomorrow (11/11/09) with Lauren Richardson to talk about family photography. Check it out from 7-9am on FOX OKC

One of the things I will mention is that one of the most difficult things in the world is to get a baby or little kid to do what you want them to do for photos. They can be happy as can be, smiling, giggling and be the sweetest kid in the world and when they see that big camera (or maybe my big head) they DO NOT want to cooperate. It happens for older kids too!

I decided if I cant even get my own daughter to smile pretty on demand, I would just go with letting them actually BE happy. Let them play. Let them be themselves and capture who they are. I am so glad now I have photos of Elaina doing her thing at different times in her life. That is the way I love to capture family and kids photos.

I have become a fan of cloning if I could clone Sarah after working with her for her wedding. She called me a while back and said she LOVED my work and went on to describe just why. (gush gush) Then I asked her, "so what are your thoughts, are you interested in going forward?" She replied "um, here's my credit card number" After checking her wedding blog called "Pugnacious Me" (ha!) and tweeting back and forth, (like me, the fastest way to her attention is a "D sarahtsolomon") it has been a pleasure.

She and Aaron got married in charming Crown Heights in a stylish classic setting and then ramped it up with a clean and modern reception at Oklahoma Heritage Museum. In case you don't know this place, it is the perfect balance between Oklahoma Heritage (classic old building) that has been infused with art gallery style. Rebecca Thai designed the event with sleek glass vases and her signature floral spheres and highlighted the night with a cake suspended/ floating over crystal beads.

Beyond the beautiful style of the decor, Sarah & Aaron had the perfect balance between throwing a killer party for family and friends and really being in love in the moment. (Not to mention they look like European models so not bad to photograph)

Sarah works for a PR firm and advises and implements social media for them. So unlike so many people I have heard who say "I don't get Twitter" She gets it! She and Aaron tweeted their vows just after the ceremony. It was cool to see all the #sarahaaronwed posts throughout the day. Her dad even welcomed people at the reception to "Hash Tag Sarah Aaron Wed" ha ha!

Rebecca Thai (Little Surprises Event Design) came up with this unique and very cool "floating cake" idea.

Sarah's Dad (@elsol) is one of the all time cool dads. He's a blast, loving, quite intelligent (head of PR I think for AT&T) and since he works for AT&T, I think hes the first dad that I have given more money to than he has to me ;) -JK

A few favs from their "Day After Shoot". Sarah & Aaron stopped back in OKC on their way back from San Francisco to Dallas. They were so relaxed and we got to get creative with some midday light in ways we weren't able to on the wedding day.

It's a real live full blog post! ...I know!!

And yes, I am giving into smart yet annoying titles in an effort to be the top listing on Google and subsequently take over the world. ;)

It's been an amazing and busy summer and I haven't posted a full wedding on the blog since May. That is about to change, well, it just did. I will be posting all the weddings one after another here for the next couple weeks.

Reistle and Chris are simply enjoyable! Reistle is a sculptor and Chris is an entrepreneur. He will someday soon launch an advertising firm and currently is involved with the launch of Traditions Sportswear which is super stylin' collegiate merchandise. They found me through Judy Lehmbeck (party planning extraordinaire ) so thank you so much Judy! There were so many cool details and special plans to this wedding and the way Chris operates reminds me so much of myself. He had a stylin' custom tux from Spencer Stone Co. (including a tie bow tie) and did a video production (Chris' Producer Filmography is listed on IMDB) of their life and how he is every bit the champion as Rocky ;) They had both a unique and personal style to their reception including cool place cards and custom bobble heads for all the groomsmen!. I also loved how all the wedding party wore their own choice and yet coordinated so well.

Since that is already more than I ever write, let me just finish by saying, I love when people put as much personal passion into their wedding as I do into their photography. It feels like such a good fit. I can't wait to hang with Chris and Reistle more soon.

Oklahoma City Engagement / Andrew & Melissa

I had the absolute honor of documenting Andrew's proposal to Melissa in Downtown Oklahoma City on Saturday. It was really fun planning with Andrew. He had several awesome surprises set up which I commend him for since I was all about the whole proposal event thing!

The big moment!

A couple light painting portraits I did afterwards. I got the idea for this from the Voltron of Awesomeness, Jeff Newsom. I found out in talking to a friend that Vincent Van Gogh actually discovered this possibility of light painting. Very cool and fun to experiment with!

A quick preview from a great night a few weeks ago. Shana and Mike are from D.C. and were in town for a really really nice night among an intimate group of family and friends.
Shana was the predecessor to the current Deputy Administrator of NASA and Mike works for a private security and technology firm for the Defense Department. In other words, they are a combined 2,427,132 times smarter than I am. I loved hanging out with all their friends who came in from coast to coast. Red Prime was a perfect indication of how all OKC is ;)

I am so thrilled after emerging from my troll cave (a.k.a. design session) when albums materialize. I really think it is the completion of my work and sooooo much more amazing than individual photos. Here's a quick preview of a beautiful day on Saturday. This wedding was planned perfectly and went very very well. Christina and Matt were in Mexico before I woke up on Sunday. Man I'm jealous! Do I say that every time? Yes I do! And yes I am!

and one from her bridal fashion shoot. She chose one of my favorites!! We matted it with a wide, 8-ply mat (as always) and a sleek black Roma Moulding. It was a work of art!!! (If I may say so ;)

The cool thing about clouds is the potential you have after they clear. Today was a nice shade of overcast which provided for some really even light for Lauren & Trevor (and Taylor)'s shoot. Then as I hoped and prayed, we got a little visit from some gorgeous sun. Here is a preview of one engagement photo and one relaxed headshot for Lauren.

I met Ashley and Andrew up at Boone Pickens Stadium on Saturday and we had a UH-MAZING shoot. Here is one preview image of one of the best fields I have found thanks to my friend Sarah Rhoads who pointed me south from campus to find some treasures!

This shot was actually after the shoot was "over" and we were heading back to the car. I tend to do that sometimes.

My daughter's favorite flower

Bet you didn't know a weed could be a beautiful flower. My daughter thinks so because she can pick it and blow all the fuzzies away. My buddy Aaron Snow captured an amazing landscape yesterday and inspired me to go shoot for myself today with the beautiful clouds again. This was the last shot I took and it is almost straight out of the camera. Just a slight bit of curves brightness adjustments. Man I love my Nikon D3's colors.

Oh and this isn't just a regular ole dandelion. It was with out a doubt the biggest one I have ever seen. 4" diameter.

I have absolutely loved working with Heather and Matt and their family. We did an amazing eng shoot in the streets of Tulsa, then one of my all time favorite bridal shoots with Heather.
Then on their wedding day, although I knew it was going to be an perfectly planned event, I was racking my brain for some ideas of what to shoot in the rain since it looked inevitable that it would not only rain but POUR and it was looking like about 50 degrees. Fortunately I didn't have to use my awesome idea I planned for the rain (it is ready should I need it this summer)

Anyway, Heather and Matt are such an inspiring fit! During all the 9000 photos I have of them (wow!) I have seen nothing but compatibility in them. I had such a great time at their wedding..It was an awesome kick off to wedding season.

Thanks so much Heather, Matt, Stacey and Steve. And many congratulations!

They had to move the ceremony from a plan of having it on the front lawn overlooking the lake to this covered veranda. They had such an awesome attitude and did amazingly well transforming this area into a cozy little place for the hundreds of guests to sit under roof and with heaters! Way to go Steve!!!

Yeah, there's not one single thing even close to in focus on this one. Cool isn't it?!?!

I always try to capture a night shot of the venue after all is said and done and eaten etc. I deserve extra credit for this one. I put my Nikon D3 to the test and shot this in the rain. I was pleasantly surprised when I saw the water drops on the lens in the photo. Perfect ending to a day that rained on and off all day.

Purple Storm

I had another perfect moment that I couldn't script happen the other night. (my favorite)
We headed out to get some magic light and tall grass (a nice combo) and because of traffic we had to go to a closer spot. We still captured some amazing images and after we thought we were done, this purple storm rolled in and in about a 30mph wind, I snagged this killer shot. All Jenny and Ryan had to do was kiss. Man my clients have it easy.

I took this standing 20 ft from my desk today. I can't quite see it while sitting at my desk [unfortunately] but now I can put it on my desktop. Plus these few beautiful days of spring last only just a few here in Oklahoma. I just drove by the tree pictured a few posts below and in only a few days all the flowers are gone and just an average green tree stands there. See, this is why I like photography...you get to keep moments in time.

anyway...I have had such a refreshing week due to the grace of God doing some great things in my life. I wish the same for you!

I was thinking of how to describe this couple since I have known Dimetrius for about 10 years (Song Yee for only the last year or so) and what I keep thinking of is they make you feel a ray of light every time you see them. In getting to know Song Yee more recently, she seems so together and one of those people that you just know is going to succeed in whatever she is doing...in her new career as a pharmacist, in her recent preoccupation of planning her wedding and most importantly, in her relationship with "D". I can't even begin to tell the story of D here, but I am so happy to see him doing so well in life. D is an artist (an amazing guitar player) and that really enviable combination of cool, fun, thoughtful, relaxed and passionate and spiritual.

I obviously can't wait until their wedding next month.

They are ordering a rockin' 20x30 canvas of this image. Dang that is going to be cool. You should be friends with them just so you can go to their house and see it.

I was so honored to be a part of such an amazingly stylish and well planned event. Every detail was thought of and I think every member of the bridal party and guests was so well taken care of. A testimony to the Lewis and Greenfield families good hearts. Leslie and Jeremy are so good together...whether during their engagement shoot where they convinced me very quickly how in love they were, to dealing with the "little" stresses of a wedding day, they just fit.

Talmadge Powell, the event designer did such an amazing job as you will see. I watched a little of the the Presidential Inaugural Luncheon and I think this wedding edged that out in terms of style and service. (I mean it!)

Also it was such a pleasure to have my friend Josh McCullock shoot with me for this wedding. The schedule was tight, so among lots of other great shots, sending him over to the Phillbrook to get the myriad of details was invaluable. Thanks Josh!!!

In the prime of the fall weather, I met Leslie & Jeremy up on Historic Rt. 66 for a super stylin' engagement shoot.

Hey giddy pre-marital bliss can be a little cheesy sometimes right?

But there's nothing cheesy about Christian Louboutin shoes. Saaaweet! (I confess, I didn't know what they were until I saw Jasmine Star's blog post on them...)

We ended up at Tres Suenos Winery for a gorgeous sunset (I always order one of those up for my clients).

Not too long after this shoot, I had the amazing visual pleasure of shooting these guys UH-MAZING!!! wedding. That post is cooking right now.

I love shooting photo-journalistically and love shooting artistically. My aim each shoot is to help you relax, have fun and capture authentic images that are so “you”. My way of doing this is simply to get to know you, pay attention to what gets you excited and enjoy the challenge of letting personalities and environment inspire me each time I shoot. I am more than a documentarian though; emotion, artistic style and memories of real moments are what give our lives meaning. I love that I can capture that in images.

I honestly am so thankful I get to work for people and produce a product and service that they get excited about (in fact usually thrilled). Since starting my business, I have always wanted to do hand-crafted style projects and treat people the way I want to be treated as a customer. I like it when the important things I buy are of the highest quality, have options to make it the way I want it and have people involved, not policies. Running a business and being an artist can be a difficult mixture but I want the art and craftsmanship to always win out.

We are back in the office (and classroom as the case may be) after having a wonderful trip to Mexico for the last couple weeks. I will post all about it after I climb the mountain of email I have in front of me. Thanks so much for giving us the chance to rest and get ready for a great year (as if you had the choice) :)

While working on another album this afternoon, I have been listening to Charlie Hall's relatively new album, "The Bright Sadness"
One song I have heard before totally jumped out at me today. I don't have the energy today to go into depth but this year has been such a challenge for me/us. Many of you know our family lost our Dad this year, which has been way more difficult than I imagined given we knew it was coming for a long time. Our daughter has been amazing and pretty much perfect but the combination of this business exploding this year, having an infant and Anna going back to school full time has been a liiiiittle stressful at times (ok, all the time).
But I digress...a song on this album is called "Bloom Again". It's super encouraging and poignant for me right now. Also a quote from a book I read last month also has kept me focused on the right things. It is from Glenn Beck. (pictured below)

This photo was an accident but I later saw it and really liked the perspective it gives. Maybe a little reminder that many of our plans are not what ultimately brings the most valuable things???

I added 2 more photos...

I was just playin' around with some images from Mexico from this year. I did them in Photoshop and Photomatix in a process called HDR. It is taking multiple different exposures (same composition, different shutter speeds) and combining them to create High Dynamic Range.

the absolute master of this stuff is Trey Radcliff and his blog is Stuck In Customs If you are interested in this process (we photo nerds call Photoshop editing "Processing") you should check out his tutorial. It is not only super informative but also hilarious.

anyway, I have only played with a few to give it a try. Maybe more to come this winter in some down time. The cool thing about it to me is that it is totally real. Nothing is added really. It is just incorporating all the lights and darks that your eye sees a lot more of so in a way, HDR is closer to what your mind experienced when seeing that scene. Which is nice...

I couldn't resist. After a day of cleaning up outside, re-organizing my office, catching up on billing, backing up and restoring my iPhone, working on getting framing orders finished for Christmas delivery, planning out my next batch of albums to design and catching up with family, I came across this photo of my girls last spring in Cancun. I laughed out loud at how much I love that little girl!! ... and so I had to play with the photo and post.

National Meg Guess Day

Ok it is in my book anyway. Today is the 1 year anniversary of Meg Guess Couture boutique opening in MidTown OKC. She had been in business for a while before that but the new boutique has now been a gem in the city for a year now. This isn't just another vendor that I work with, Meg shares the same passion for quality, industry friendships and both personal and professional values that make her a joy to work (and chat) with.

The following are some images from the last year and a half from when we have worked together from weddings to fashion shoots. Some you may have seen on here before, some are previously unposted.

The next several are from a wedding with the bride in a custom Meg Guess Gown. Check out how happy she is to see herself in her custom gown. This is one of my favorite memories from the year. Joanna was so over the top excited. As as guy, I caught a little glimpse of how worth it is for brides to get EXACTLY what they want for the wedding dress.

As fascinating as the post below was, (as evidenced by zero comments) I had to get Madonna off the top of my blog. Phew!

Now on to some crazy cute pics of The Spotts family. I am kicking off my family photo availability now days so I was happy to meet one of my best friends David and his family out for some super fun pics and a family double pizza date afterwards. Check out the last few for some nice sparkle!

It has been such a pleasure to work with Ashley and her family for the last few months. She planned everything so well (with Judy's expertise of course) with some of the best artists and vendors around and told us she just wanted to scrap tradition and have a great time the whole night with family and friends. Hey, you got a glass of champagne when you walked into the venue. Can't beat that! Ashley and Josh, I loved the atmosphere with so many beautiful people and details.
